Alongside my work in journalism and publishing, I write poetry. Incessantly.
I’ve always been a creative. My parents, both doctors, are the two most analytically-minded people I know. and while I certainly inherited a degree of their right-brained attitudes, I knew my heart would always belong to my art.
I started playing the piano at age 7, and very quickly began composing and performing my own songs as a new way to tell the stories I had always loved. I picked up more instruments along the way — the ukulele, guitar, and banjo, to name a few — primarily as a way to expand my songwriting accompaniments. And though my now-archived SoundCloud uploads never really went anywhere (and I pray it stays that way), my writing only picked up speed.
Currently, I'm finishing my first full collection of poetry, titled Backbone, and always have multiple fiction pieces in the works. I’ve been published four times in Syracuse University’s premiere student-run literary journal, Perception Magazine, and have had the pleasure of participating in multiple poetry readings in and around CNY (pictured above). My Substack is linked here. I also recently began an Instagram to track, review, and share my current reads, @catiescottreads (on the nose, I know).
I'm still an avid music lover, and when I'm not reading or writing, you can often find me plucking at my guitar. I also love painting, distance running, and combing through vintage & antique stores for hours on end. Basic needs include public transportation, wired headphones, and frequent trips to parks and/or museums.
